Applications

White background.

Flinders Calcium Silicate is used across broadacre, sugarcane, horticulture, pasture and turf systems to support soil conditioning and plant resilience. Our agronomy team works with growers to tailor application rates to local soil conditions.

Applications

Green leaf.

Broadacre

Green leaf icon.

Flinders Calcium Silicate is used in broadacre systems including cereals, cotton and pulse crops where soil conditioning and plant strength are priorities. Silicon is removed in harvested biomass and may require replenishment depending on soil type and cropping intensity.

  • Improves soil conditioning and workability
  • Supports root development in high biomass systems
  • Contributes to plant resilience under environmental stress
  • Suitable for repeated cropping environments.

Sugar Cane

Sugarcane is a high silicon-accumulating crop. Significant quantities of silicon are removed in harvested biomass, particularly in high-yielding systems. Flinders Calcium Silicate is applied in cane production to support soil function and plant structural strength.

Industry data indicates sugarcane can remove between 100–175 kg per hectare of silicon per crop, with high-yielding crops exceeding 250 kg per hectare.

Commercial Results – SE QLD and Northern NSW
Growers applying Flinders Calcium Silicate (Coarse) over multiple seasons have observed:

  • Yield increases of up to 40 percent, with average increases around 25 percent
  • Improved tolerance to salinity and waterlogging
  • Reduced leaf freckling associated with heat and UV stress
  • Improved stalk strength and reduced lodging
  • Reduced reliance on additional gypsum or lime through improved soil conditioning.

Horticulture

Flinders Calcium Silicate is used in horticultural systems including strawberries, avocados and tree crops where soil structure and plant resilience are critical to production outcomes.

Example – Strawberries

  • Contributes to stronger cell walls and improved plant structure
  • Supports tolerance to drought, frost and environmental stress
  • Assists natural plant defence responses, including management of powdery mildew pressure
  • Supports improved nutrient availability and interaction
  • Suitable for protected cropping systems where disease pressure can be elevated.

Pasture Systems

Green leaf.

Flinders Calcium Silicate is used in pasture systems including lucerne where soil conditioning and plant resilience are critical to productive grazing and fodder operations.

Commercial Example – Lucerne, Lockyer Valley QLD

At Rivermead, Fernvale, Flinders Calcium Silicate has been applied in commercial lucerne production with the following observed outcomes:

  • Reduced insect and disease pressure compared to untreated areas
  • Stimulated root development producing stronger, thicker stems
  • Yield increases observed in excess of 40 percent in treated areas
  • Reduced plant stress during periods of waterlogging
  • Improved soil workability, reducing reliance on additional gypsum or lime.

Turf

Green leaf.

Flinders Calcium Silicate is used in commercial turf operations where soil conditioning and plant strength directly influence slab integrity and re-cut cycles.

Commercial Results – Scenic Rim QLD

  • Improved slab integrity with stronger root mass
  • Reduced waste to compost through stronger turf cohesion
  • Shorter time between re-cuts
  • Improved leaf colour retention and post-harvest quality
  • More even germination on crusting soils.
